COVID-19 cases top 5,000 in Lithuania

VILNIUS, Oct. 3, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – Lithuania reported 125 COVID-19 cases as of Saturday morning, bringing the total cases to 5,081, according to data from the health ministry.

So far, 94 people have died and 2,494 have recovered, said the ministry, adding that a total of 796,027 tests have been carried out.

Lithuania reported 172 COVID-19 new cases on Friday, a record increase representing the biggest daily spike in the country since Feb. 28 when Lithuania confirmed its first case.

According to the National Public Health Center under the country’s health ministry, the COVID-19 numbers are on the rise with the number of cases in September six times higher than that of July.

In the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic, countries across the globe, including China, Russia, Britain and the United States, are racing to develop a vaccine.

The Lithuanian government has decided to purchase a possible COVID-19 vaccine via the European Commission’s joint procurement mechanism.
