SD Burman’s birth anniversary celebrated in Cumilla
CUMILLA, Oct 1, 2020 (BSS) – Legendary singer and music director Sachin Dev Burman’s 114th birth anniversary was celebrated in the town here this morning.
Cumilla Shilpakala Academy, Nazrul Parishad with Deputy Commissioner of Cumilla Md Abul Fazal Mir paid tribute to Burman marking his birth anniversary by placing a wreath at the portrait of Burman at his birth place here at around 11:30 am.
A discussion on SD Burman’s life and creation was also held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner this noon. Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Nuruzzaman, Additional Police Super Tanvir Salehin Emon, cultural personality Somir Chowdhury, Papri Bosu from Jatiya Mohila Sangstha and Imam Mojumder were present, among others.
S D Burman was born at Nawabbari in Cumilla on October 1, 1906, in the royal family of Tripura. His mother was Rajkumari Nirmala Devi of Manipur and his father was Prince Nabadwip Chandra Dev.
S D Burman completed his matriculation at the age of 14 from Comilla Zilla School in 1920, then pursued higher studies from Comilla Victoria College. From there, he went to Kolkata, where he received musical lessons from 1925 to 1930, under the tutelage of K C Dey. He also received lessons of classical music from Ustad Khalifa Badal Khan, the Sarengi maestro and from Sarodist Ustad Alauddin Khan.
Burman’s compositions were sung by the leading singers of the era, including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum, Mukesh and Talat Mahmood.
He is the father of Bollywood music composer R D Burman.
