Flood situation deteriorates in Karotoa river basin

GAIBANDHA, OCT 1, 2020 (BSS) – The overall flood situation in Karotoa river
basin areas located at Palashbari and Gobindaganj upazilas of the district
deteriorated further in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said the water level of
the Karotoa, one of the mighty rivers in the district, rose by 11 cm during
the time due to on rush of hilly waters from the up streams and continuous
rainfall in last few days. The Karotoa is now flowing 106 cm above its danger
mark at Katakhali bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila.

A union parishad road at Darbosto union of the upazila had been washed away
due to the pressure of the flood water, as a result a number of villages
including Bogulagari, Namapara, Satabalupara, Bishwanathpur, Mariarampura,
Talukrahimapur, Sapgosi, Kalkapur villages of the upazila have been flooded
and at least 10,000 people of the villages have been marooned creating untold
sufferings to them.

On the other hand, fresh areas of Kishoregari union of Palashbari upazila
have also been inundated.

The flood affected people have taken shelter at higher places and various
academic institutions of the upazila belonging to their domestic animals and
poultry birds.

The standing crops like T-Aman paddy, sugar cane fields and vegetables of
the upazilas went under flood water making the growers more worried about
their crops and their food security.

On Thursday afternoon, deputy commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin visited the
flood hit areas of the upazilas and distributed relief materials among the
flood victims at Golapbagh Dakhil Madrasha of the upazila town as the chief
guest.

Earlier, DC Abdul Matin addressed the relief distribution function as the
chief guest and said the sufficient relief materials are in stock at the
godowns of the government. There was no reason to worry about reliefs.

Upazila chairman Abdul Latif Prodhan, UNO Ramkrishna Borman, district
relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali, upazila project
implementation officer Md. Zahirul Islam, political leaders and public
representatives including journalists accompanied the DC during his relief
distribution activity.
