Top police official sacked for India bus crash

NEW DELHI, July 3, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – A top police official has been
sacked from his position for Sunday’s deadly bus crash in the northern Indian
state of Uttarakhand that claimed 48 lives, officials said Tuesday.

“Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat removed the state’s
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Pushpak Jyoti, from his post Monday. Two
other officials have also been suspended,” a senior government official said.

The accident occurred when a bus carrying some 60 people skidded off a
steep mountain road and plunged into a deep gorge on the Pipali-Bhoan
motorway in Pauri Garhwal district, some 200 km from state capital Dehradun,
Sunday morning.

While 45 people died on the spot in the impact of the crash, three others
succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. Only 12 people, including seven
minors, survived the accident.

Preliminary probe has revealed that the 28-seater bus was carrying
passengers exceeding its capacity and travelling at a speed usually not
recommended in a hilly terrain. “The driver lost control of the vehicle while
negotiating a curve that led to the accident,” an official said.
