GAIBANDHA, Sept 30, 2020 (BSS)- The water level of the Ghagot and the Karotoa, two major rivers in the district, marked further rise and was flowing above danger mark during the last 24 hours ending 9 am today .

Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said, the water level of the Ghaghot increased by five centimetre (CM) and the Karotoa by 15 cm due to on rush of hilly waters from the upper catchment and unremitting rain for last few days.

The Ghagot was flowing three cm above its danger mark at new bridge road point of the district town and the Karotoa was flowing 95 cm above its danger mark at Katakhali bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila of the district inundating huge low lying areas of Darbasto, Sapmara, Shibpur, Nakai, Katabari, Fulbari, Horirampur, Mohimaganj, Rakhalburuj, Talukkanupur unions .

Hundreds of people of the unions have been marooned and passing their times with untold suffering and hardship.

The homesteads of the many people of the unions have already gone after flood water creating untold suffering to them. The standing crops including T aman paddy, sugar cane fields and vegetable land went under flood water making the farmers more worried about the fate of the crops and their food security.

To mitigate their sufferings the upazila administration sanctioned five metric tonnes of rice for the poor flood victims of the unions.

Due to rise of water level of the Karotoa river the flood control embankment along the river has become risky and vulnerable at many points.

Executive engineer of BWDB Mokhlesur Rahman told BSS that they are aware of the worsening flood situation and were closely monitoring of any impending damage of the embankment.
