Speaker for involving MPs in development process to attain SDG

Dhaka, 29 Sep, 2020 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said the members of parliament (MPs) need to be involved in the development process to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

She made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by UNDP Bangladesh here today, said a press release.

During the program, the speaker also inaugurated the ‘My Parliamentary Constituency-My Constitution’ data platform.

“The elected members of parliament work relentlessly for the development of their own parliamentary constituencies and the improvement of the living standards of the people. In this case, the ‘My Parliamentary Constituency-My Constituency’ data platform app will bring information about SDGs in a jiffy,” the speaker said.

Mentioning that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present among a small number of world leaders at the UN meeting which adopted the MDGs and SDGs she said, “Over the last five years, her government has been successfully fulfilling every step of this SDG commitment by adopting various plans.”

Bangladesh has already submitted a voluntary national report to the United Nations and the present members of parliament are very much engaged in implementing these development agendas, Dr Shirin said.

“Implementing the SDGs to keep the economy on the right track has become a complex challenge due to the employment gap as a result of COVID-19. Therefore, based on the views of the Members of Parliament, the Data Platform has been sorted out keeping in view the essentials in the light of their actual experience,” she said.

It was said during the discussion that on this platform, MPs will get 10 thematic data of their area, child marriage rate, maternal mortality rate and other information which can be further elaborated later as per the need.

“An image of the overall situation in the constituency can be obtained through this. This will make the decision easier,” Dr Shirin opined.

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak and UNDP Global Lead and Asia-Pacific Focal Point Charles Shovel spoke as special guests at the presentation, made by UNDP Bangladesh Policy Specialist Mozammel Haque.

Deputy Speaker Md. Fazle Rabbi Mia conducted the question-answer session.

Senior Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat Zafar Ahmed Khan delivered the welcome speech and Sudipta Mukherjee, Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh delivered the inaugural speech.
