Two arrested with 8,010-kg govt rice in Khulna

KHULNA, Sept 29, 2020 (BSS) – Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two youths with 8,010-kg of government rice kept for selling at 10 Taka per kg among destitute people conducting a overnight drive in a rice mill of Labanchara Police Station in the city.

The arrestees were identified as Shamsul Islam alias Shahajada Akunji, 28, hailed from Kharabad village under Batiaghata upazila in Khulna and Mostofa Kamal Talukder, of Kutibari village under Morelganj upazila in Bagerhat.

A special RAB team raided Rupsha Auto Rice Mill, adjacent to Rupsha Bridge, around 10pm responding to a secret information that some dishonest hoarders were planning to sell the government rice on black market, said a RAB-6 press release today.

During the drive, two youths were apprehended along with 8,010-kg of government rice contained in 267 sacks as a sack of swing machine, one truck, one trawler, two mobile phones and four SIM cards were also seized, the release said, however, adding, one youth managed to flee.

The seized rice was tagged with a slogan of the Directorate of Food Department “Sheikh Hasinar Bangladesh, Khudha Hobe Nirruddesh” and it was kept at the rice mill for selling at Taka 10 per kg among poor and destitute people, the release said.

During the primary interrogation, the duo confessed to RAB that they were purchasing government rice from dishonest dealers and selling those on black market from the rice mill by changing sacks attached to government slogans since long, it added.

A case was filed with Labanchara Police Station in this connection.
