306 low-income families get housing in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Sept 28, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 306 low-income families are living in brick-built houses driving out their long-lasting living life in thatched or mud-house as they got community housing in the city.

They had moved to their new houses, which they constructed with support from Community Housing Development Fund (CHDF) with supervision of their respective Community Development Committee (CDC) initiated by Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC).

Earlier, each of the beneficiaries having land but not house were given loan worth Taka two lakh for the house building purposes.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton revealed this while visiting some of the newly built houses at different areas of the city Sunday saying the city corporation will provide more housing support for the less-income families aimed at improving their living and livelihood condition through ensuring their habitats.

He said that proper housing for people living in urban poverty had become a prerequisite to achieve sustainable development goals (SDG-11), and ensure planned urbanisation and continued economic progress of the city.

Liton said that the city corporation has taken initiatives to build more affordable houses by adopting a need-based coordinated plan to tackle the growing housing crisis.

The city corporation has been implementing Livelihoods Improvement of Urban Poor Communities (LIUPC) project in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme in order to achieve long-term sustainable growth by eradicating urban poverty and achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The project has been designed to reach initially the unserved and underserved urban population in the city and to promote livelihoods and living conditions of 1.80 lakh poor people living in urban areas.

Mayor Liton requested all concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for proper and successful implementation of the project so that the target group of people can derive its total benefits.

He focused on stronger collaboration between the government and non-government organisations, and involving public representatives and other relevant stakeholders to promote plans for people living in urban poor areas.

He also suggested implementing community-led housing models that accommodate the urban poor in city areas and help improve their living standards.

Among others, RCC Ward Councilor Masud Rana Shahin, Executive Engineer Nur Islam and Chief Community Development Officer Azizur Rahman accompanied the mayor
