World Rabies Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Sept 27, 2020 (BSS) – World Rabies Day will be observed tomorrow in the country as elsewhere across the globe in a befitting manner.

This year’s theme of the day is “End Rabies: Collaborate, Vaccinate”.

World Rabies Day, a global health observance started in 2007 to raise awareness about rabies and bring together partners to enhance prevention and control efforts worldwide. World Rabies Day is observed in many countries, including the United States.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates there are 55,000 rabies deaths every year. According to the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, the total is 70,000, with 10 million treated for bites from potentially infected dogs.

Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of infected animals. The rabies virus is usually transmitted through a bite especially from a dog.

Mass Dog Vaccination programme is important to prevent the disease in the world, said a press release.

The Zoonotic Disease Control Programme, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Directorate have taken a science-based strategy, as a result of which rabies related deaths have come down from 2000 in 2009 to 200 in 2019.

Symptoms of rabies—which include fever, hyperactivity, excited behaviour, difficulty swallowing or paralysis—may appear any time between 2 to 8 weeks after the bite. Once a person develops symptoms, the outcome is nearly always fatal.
