SC upholds HC bail to journalist Khalidi

DHAKA, Sept 21, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today upheld an anticipatory bail given by the High Court (HC) to bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

“Dismissed,” said the order passed by a three-member apex court virtual bench headed by Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, as it scrapped an ACC plea against the High Court order.

ACC lawyer Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan moved the plea, while senior lawyers Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Adv Abdul Matin Khasru and AM Amin Uddin argued for journalist Khalidi.

The High Court on August 26 gave Khalidi eight-week anticipatory bail. The anti-graft body later filed the plea against the bail order.

ACC deputy director Gulshan Anwar filed the case on July 30 for depositing around Taka 42 crore in different bank accounts, saying Khalidi had no legal source against this sum. The ACC alleged that Khalidi amassed the money through illegal means.
