HC rules over bail of former lawmaker Awal, wife

DHAKA, Sept 17, 2020 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain in three weeks as to why it shall not cancel lower court order that granted bail to former Pirojpur-1 lawmaker AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Pervin in three graft cases.

A High Court virtual bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order after holding hearing on revision cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the lower court order.

ACC counsel Adv Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the anti-graft body, while deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik stood for the state.

The ACC on September 14 filed the revision case with the High Court, pleading to scrap Awal and his wife’s bail in the cases.

“Of the three cases, Awal has been made accused in all three cases, while his wife was accused in one. The High Court on January 7 granted them bail for eight weeks in the cases. The couple surrendered before Pirojpur district judge court on March 3 and pleaded for bail, which was subsequently allowed. We later filed the revision case against that order,” ACC counsel Khurshid Alam Khan said.
