DHAKA, Sept 16, 2020 (BSS) – The family of former Pallabi Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Zahidur Rahman Zahid, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case lodged over custodial death of a youth in capital’s Mirpur area in 2014, deposited Taka 2 lakh today as compensation for the plaintiff.

Defence counsel Advocate Faruk Ahmed deposited the money to Bangladesh Bank Sadarghat Branch after taking permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayes.

“We have deposited the compensation money with the bank, and now would appeal against the life imprisonment sentence,” Advocate Ahmed said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on September 9 sentenced three policemen to life imprisonment and fined them Taka one lakh each in the case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayes had passed the order, sentencing then Pallabi Police Station sub-inspector Zahidur Rahman Zahid, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Rashedul, ASI Kamruzzaman Mintu to life imprisonment.

The court also sentenced police source Sumon and Russel to seven-year imprisonment and fined them Taka 20 thousand each.

The court in its order had also ordered the three convicted cops to give Taka two lakh each to the plaintiff as compensation within the next 14 days.

The court came up with the judgement after examining 24 witnesses.

According to the case documents, police sources Sumon stormed into a marriage function at Mirpur-11 on February 8, 2014, and started harassing girls there. Victim Jony and his brother asked Sumon to leave immediately.

Sumon left the place, only to return the next day and again started harassing girls. When Jony and his brother obstructed him, Sumon called police to arrest them. As police detained Jony and his brother and were taking them to the police station, locals chased them and police fired at the crowds.

After taking to the police station, the accused cops beat Jony and his brother badly. As Jony lost his sense, they rushed him to National Hospital. As Jony’s condition deteriorated, police took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared Jony dead.

Jony’s brother Imtiyaj Hossain Roky on August 7, 2014, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court against eight including then officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station Ziaur Rahman.

On April 17, 2016, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla framed charges against the five accused.
