Water levels of major rivers in B’putra basin rising again
RANGPUR, Sept 15, 2020 (BSS) – Water levels of major rivers started rising again following onrush of huge water amid monsoon rains from the upper catchment in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours till at 9 am today.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water levels of major rivers might continue to rise during the next 48 hours in the basin where the Dharla may cross the danger mark (DM) at Kurigram during the period.
According to a bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB, the northern Bangladesh and adjoining northeastern Indian states in the Brahmaputra basin witnessed moderate to heavy monsoon rains during the last 24 hours.
The recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am were 100m at Pasighat, 80mm at Jalpaiguri, 70mm at Dhubri and 53mm at Cherrapunji points of the northwestern Indian states in the upstream.
Besides, the recorded rainfalls were 30mm at Dalia, 22mm at Chilmari and 119mm at Panchagarh monitoring points of BWDB during the period.
Water levels of the Dharla rose by 5cm at Kurigram, Ghagot by 2cm at Gaibandha, Brahmaputra by 19cm at Noonkhawa and 17cm at Chilmari and Teesta rose by 2cm at Dalia points during the last 24 hours till 9am today.
Besides, water levels of the Jamuna rose by 4cm at Fulchhari while fell by 1cm at Bahadurabad and 3cm at Sariakandi and remained steady at Kazipur and rose by 1cm at Sirajganj points during the period.
However, the major rivers were flowing below their respective danger marks at all points in the Brahmaputra basin at 9am today.
The Dharla was flowing 18cm below its DM at Kurigram, Brahmanpara by 130cm at Noonkhawa and 100cm at Chilmari, Teesta by 40cm at Dalia and Ghaghot below the DM by 132cm at Gaibandha points at 9 am.
Besides, the Jamuna was flowing 106cm below the DM at Fulchhari, 116cm at Bahadurabad, 86cm at Sariakandi, 69cm at Kazipur and 85cm at Sirajganj points at 9 am today.
Talking to BSS today, Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Engineer Jyoti Prosad Ghosh water levels of the Dharla, Teesta, Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers might continue to rise further during the next 24 hours in the Brahmaputra basin.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and ready to take immediate steps on an emergency basis, if needed, anywhere in all eight districts of Rangpur division under Rangpur zone of BWDB,” he said.
Engineer Ghosh ruled out the possibility of another flood this season despite the Dharla might cross its danger mark at Kurigram during the next 24 to 48 hours as the monsoon rains might not continue for a long time in the Brahmaputra basin.
Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain said the district administrations with BWDB authorities are closely monitoring the situation and would take immediate steps, if necessary, anywhere in Rangpur division.
