COX’S BAZAR, Sept 14, 2020 (BSS) – The elite force today arrested another police constable suspected for linking with the murder of retired army major Sinha Md Rashed Khan, reaching the number of arrestees to 14 since a case filed on August 5.
The arrestee was identified as Rubel Sharma, one of a close associate of Teknaf Police Station’s Officer in Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Saha, who is also a prime suspect of the murder case.
“The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Rubel, who might have a connection with the murder case, from Teknaf this morning”, Senior ASP of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Khairul Islam said.
Rubel, is due in senior judicial magistrate court here at 12pm today, has already been sent to the court, said Islam who is also an investigative officer of the murder case.
For further investigation, the RAB will appeal to bring him under remand.
With the today’s arrest, a total of 14 accused so far have been brought in custody –where 10 are the members from police including Pradip Kumar Saha and other three members are from the Armed Police Battalion(APBN).
After the brutal murder, Major Sinha’s elder sister Sharmin Shahria Firdaus filed a case on August 5 accusing nine people including Teknaf police station OC Pradip, Baharchhara Check-post In-Charge Liakat, Sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Rakkhit, and Tutul, ASI Liton Miah, Constable Safanur Karim, Kamal Hossain, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, and Md Mostafa.
The local judicial magistrate court ordered the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to investigate the incident and directed Teknaf police station to file the case as a deposition.
Earlier on July 31 night, Sinha was killed in police firing in Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive.
According to the case statement, Baharchhara Check-post In-Charge Liakat and SI Nanda Dulal Rakkhit challenged the retired major Sinha and his associate — who were visiting the area to shoot a documentary.
Sinha and his associate, Sifat, a videographer, were dragged off their vehicle despite providing their respective identities. The police officers then fired at Sinha, killing him on the spot.
After the murder, the police officers also filed two fake cases against the Sinha and others to frame them as drug dealers, said Sharmin Shahria Firdaus, Sinha’s sister.
