Six sentenced to death for murdering Tangail school teacher, wife

DHAKA, Sept 13, 2020 (BSS) – A fast-track court here today sentenced six persons to death in a case lodged over murder of retired Tangail school teacher Anil Kumar Das and his wife Kalpana Rani Das in 2017.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the judgement in presence of the convicts.

The death-row-convicts are- Swapan Kumar Das, Jahidul Islam, Farhad, Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, Manjurul Islam and Shoyan Miah.

The court also sentenced them to seven-year imprisonment and fined them Taka 50 thousand each, to suffer one more year imprisonment in default, for the charge of hiding the bodies of the victims.

According to the case documents, victim Anil’s step brother Swapan hatched the plot to kill his brother and sister-in-law for occupying their properties and murdered them with the help of the others July 26, 2017, in their Rosulpur house in Tangail.

The killers put the bodies of the victims in separate sacs and threw those in the septic tank of their toilet. Later police recovered the bodies from there.

Anil’s son Nirmal Kumar Das filed the case with Tangail Sadar Police Station and police on September 17, 2018, filed charge-sheet against six. The court on August 7, 2019, framed charges in the case and today came up with the judgement after examining 27 witnesses on different hearing dates.
