Enhancing fish production stressed to meet nutrition

RANGPUR, Sept 10, 2020 (BSS) – Officials and experts at a function have stressed on enhancing fish production to meet nutrition of the people and strengthen their immune systems in the wake of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They viewed this at the function arranged by Hakimpur Upazila Fisheries Department on the upazila parishad premises in Dinajpur district for releasing 400 kg of fish fries in 15 water bodies on Wednesday afternoon.

The function was arranged with participation of a limited number of fish farmers, hatchery owners and government officials strictly marinating physical distance and health directives of the government to prevent community transmission of COVID-19.

Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdul Wahab Bhuiyan attended the function and released fingerlings in a government pond of the upazila as the chief guest with Hakimpur upazila parishad Chairman Harun Ar Rashid Harun in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner of Dinajpur Mahmudul Hasan, Hakimpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdur Rafiul Alam and municipal Mayor Jamil Hossain Cholonto and District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Dr SM Rezaul Karim attended the event as special guests.

Hakimpur Upazila Fisheries Officer Ummey Habiba delivered a welcome speech and said that Bangladesh has already achieved self-sufficiency in fish and continues increasing its production to the tune of one lakh tonnes on an average annually in recent years.

DFO Dr SM Rezaul Karim said the government is implementing inclusive programmes for expanding fish cultivation in rural areas and providing assistance to fishermen, fish farmers and private sector entrepreneurs to increase fish production.

The chief guest called upon rural people to enhance fish production along with protecting natural breeding grounds, stop catching of small fishes to preserve indigenous fish species to achieve self-reliance by cutting poverty.

He put emphasis on ensuring best utilisation of water bodies and transferring latest technologies to enhance fish production, meet nutrition of the population and increase their disease resistant capacities amid COVID-19 pandemic.
