128th birth anniversary of Suhrawardy observed

DHAKA, Sept 8, 2020 (BSS) – The 128th birth anniversary of the champion of democracy and one of the greatest leaders of undivided India Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy was observed in the country today in a befitting manner.

Marking the day, Bangabandhu Gabeshana Parishad (BGP) placed wreaths at his grave adjacent to the Doel Chattor on Dhaka University campus here this morning.

Later, the organisation held a milad mahfil and discussion while Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs Ministry Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku addressed the programme as the chief guest.

Presided by BGP President Lion Gani Miah Babul, Bangladesh Krishak League Vice President Sheikh Jahangir Alam, Awami League Leader MA Karim and BGP General Secretary (in-charge) Md Nurul Islam Talukder addressed it, among others.

The unparalleled leader of all Indian politics, who had dedicated his entire life to ensure the welfare of the people by upholding democracy, died at a Beirut hotel in Lebanon on December 5 in 1963. He was alone in the hotel suite at the time of his death.

Suhrawardy was a Bengali politician and statesman in the first half of the 20th century. He served as the premier of Bengal in British India and was the fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Born in an illustrious Bengali Muslim family in Midnapore, India Suhrawardy was educated at the University of Calcutta and was trained as a barrister in Oxford where he practised law at the Gray’s Inn in Great Britain.
