GP to stand beside 100,000 flood-affected families

DHAKA, Sept 2, 2020 (BSS) – Mobile phone operator, Grameenphone will provide food assistance to 100,000 families in the most flood-affected districts across the country.

In partnership with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), the operator will distribute the food stuffs as the recent flood in many parts in the country has made the on-ground reality even more challenging while Bangladesh has been fighting back to recover from the attack of COVID-19.

Each pack contains rice, sugar, salt, lentil and semolina which is expected to support a four-person family’s basic needs for a week, said a press release today.

The relief packs have already been handed over to 25,000 families in Jamalpur, Tangail, Sirajgonj, Shariatpur and Kurigram, and the distribution efforts are expected to be completed by September 20, 2020.

On the occasion of food assistance support distribution announcement in a virtual ceremony, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Md Enamur Rahman, MP said Bangladesh is facing an unprecedented challenge this year due to the current flood on top of the COVID-19 situation.

He appreciated the flood relief initiative undertaken by Grameenphone and encouraged others in the private sector to come forward too as the flooding has severely affected millions of people and their houses were inundated around the country.

BDRCS Vice Chairman Professor Dr. Md Habibe Millat said “As a response measure, we have been trying to take several initiatives to help the people whose lives and livelihood are affected. It’s a very challenging time and we have to stand beside people affected in flood.”

Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman said “The fight for COVID-19 is not over yet, and now it has become even more challenging with the addition of the flood crisis.”

“I reiterate that this is a test for all of us, and I believe that it is possible to tackle the ongoing challenges by working united,” he added.
