Atiqul inaugurates special campaign to raise holding tax collection

DHAKA, Sept 1, 2020 (BSS) – Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC)
Mayor M Atiqul Islam today inaugurated a month-long special campaign
to increase holding tax collection by bringing those under tax net who
are yet to pay the holding tax.

“During the campaign, we will go door-to-door at houses, offices,
courts and businesses establishments enabling everyone paying taxes at
their convenient places, as my election manifesto was ‘Dhaka for
All’,” the mayor said at the programme in city’s Mohammadpur area.

Online tax collection will start from January 1, 2021, he said,
adding that this year, a target of collecting Taka 400 crore as
holding tax and Tk 100 crore as trade licenses has been fixed up, said
a press release.

“There are residential areas where there are shops on the ground
floor, city corporations do not have the power to issue trade licenses
in residential areas. We will have a meeting with RAJUK next week to
this end,” he said.

Atiqul said many big billboards and signboards have been illegally
erected in Dhaka city in phases. “This is completely illegal. Those
who have done so should be brought under the tax,” he added.

The mayor urged those who illegally erected signboards and
billboards to refrain from such acts. “This city belongs to all of us.
If you want to do business here, you have to pay tax at a fixed rate”.

After the inauguration, the mayor visited various business
establishments, banks, super shops and residential buildings. At that
time, a total of Taka five lakh sixty thousand was fined for not
having trade licenses of various organizations, keeping goods on the
road, running illegal advertisement and other reasons.

The DNCC has adopted a plan to increase the tax collection without
increasing the tax rate so that the civic services and development
activities can reach the doorsteps of the people by achieving
financial self-reliance.

The campaign will help bring non-taxable houses, establishments and
newly created flats, houses, and establishments under tax net.
Besides, during the programme trade unlicensed commercial entities
will be identified and brought under trade licenses in a lawful manner
and commercial entities run by expired trade licenses will be
identified and renewed.

A six-member committee has been formed in each ward with the
convener of the ward councilor and the councilor of the reserved seat
as the joint convener to make the campaign successful.

Among others, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Selim Reza, Secretary
Rabindra Shri Barua, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Amirul Islam,
Chief Revenue Officer Abdul Hamid Mia and Ward Councilor Asif Ahmed
were present at the inauguration programme.
