Malta cultivation starts gaining popularity in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, Sept 01.2020(BSS)- The cultivation of sweet orange more known as malta started gaining popularity among the farmers in the district.

Boda upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Al-Mamun Rashid said the agriculture department has taken up massive malta cultivation programme like lemon crops extension , management and more production project .

“Under the project , the agriculture department distributed malta saplings, compost and chemical fertilizers , spray machine and cash among the 100 farmers for creating new malta orchard on five to 100 decimal of land respectively at a free of cost this season .

Malta may be exported after meeting local demand as the new variety of malta is tasted very sweet, the officer said adding that huge farmers are now keen to develop malta orchards and got success in this farming .

“I had a malta orchard on one acre of land two years ago without spray of pesticide and chemical fertilizers from which I got good result with plenty of malta fruits in my orchard”, Farmer Toriqul Islam in Boda upazila said .

He hoped that he would get about TK one lakh after selling malta from his orchard.

Deputy director (DAE)of Panchagarh Abu Hanif today visited many malta orchards in the district and was pleased to see a plenty of production there.

He said, many small and large malta orchards have been developed in the district after being inspired from the DAE and the cultivation is considered as very profitable.
