Court sends 6 including ex-Jammat MP to jail for vandalizing Bangabandhu’s picture

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 1, 2020 (BSS)- A court has sent six people including a Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer and former MP ANM Shamsul Islam, to jail in a case filed against them for vandalizing a picture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the International Islamic University Chattogram (IIUC) campus in Kumira area under Sitakunda upazila of the district.

The court of District and Sessions Judge Ismail Hossain passed the order on Tuesday (September 1).

The convicted persons are– ANM Shamsul Islam, also chairman of Trustee Board of the IIUC, Professor Ahsan Ullah Chowdhury, Dr. Mahbub Rahman, Dr. Kawsar, Md. Shafiqul Alam and Nizam Uddin.

Earlier, they were granted bail by the High Court in the same case, said District Public Prosecutor Advocate AKM Sirajul Islam Chowdhury after confirming the matter, adding,” The High Court had directed the accused to appear before the lower court.”

According to the direction, the accused appeared in the court and sought for bail, but the state opposed it. Later, the court ordered him to be sent to jail after today’s hearing.

According to the case statement, on January 29, a total of 70 Islami Chhatra Shibir members, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, backed by the aforementioned six accused, went on a rampage and vandalized the photo of Bangabandhu at the Chhatra League office in the university premises.
