India declares 7-day state mourning in memory of Pranab Mukherjee

NEW DELHI, Aug 31, 2020 (BSS) – India today declared a seven-day state mourning across the country in memory of India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee, who passed away in a city hospital this afternoon.

“As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days state mourning will be observed throughout India from August 31 to September 6, 2020,” the Indian ministry of home affairs said in a statement here this evening.

During the period of state mourning, it said, the National Flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout India, where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.

It added that the date, time and venue of the state funeral will be intimated later.

Pranab Mukherjee, the India’s 13th President, died at the Army Hospital, where he was admitted on August 10 and had a surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
He was in deep coma after the surgery. Mukherjee, 84, was also suffering from Covid-19.
