COVID-19 cases cross 10,200 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Aug 31, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases crossed the 10,200 mark today in Rangpur division amid a steady situation in the daily number of infections in recent days in the division.

“The number of coronavirus cases rose to 10,239 with 96 more infections reported after testing 376 samples on Sunday at two laboratories in the division,” said Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui. The district-wise break up of the total 10,239 patients now stands at 2,403 in Rangpur, 524 in Panchagarh, 903 in Nilphamari, 703 in Lalmonirhat, 792 in Kurigram, 910 in Thakurgaon, 3,057 in Dinajpur and 947 in Gaibandha districts.

“We have so far tested a total of 56,702 collected samples of Rangpur division till Sunday night, and of them, 10,239 were found COVID-19 positive with an infection rate of 18.05 percent,” Dr. Siddiqui said.

Along with a steady rise in the number of daily infections, the figure of healed COVID-19 patients continues increasing daily and rose to 8,091 with the recovery of 73 more infected people on Sunday in the division.

“The average recovery rate among the total 10,239 infected patients stands at 79.02 percent in Rangpur division,” he said.

The 8,091 recovered patients include 1,945 of Rangpur, 422 of Panchagarh, 804 of Nilphamari, 516 of Lalmonirhat, 635 of Kurigram, 543 of Thakurgaon, 2,543 of Dinajpur and 683 of Gaibandha districts.

“With one more death reported from Panchagarh on Sunday, the total number of fatalities rose to 177 in the division,” he said.

The district-wise break up of the 177 fatalities stands at 39 in Rangpur, 62 in Dinajpur, 17 in Thakurgaon, 16 in Nilphamari, 14 in Gaibandha, 12 in Kurigram, 10 in Panchagarh and seven in Lalmonirhat districts.

“The average casualty rate among the total 10,239 infected patients currently stands at 1.72 percent in the division,” Dr. Siddiqui added. Talking to BSS, Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Sultan Ahmed said 371 more people were put in quarantine at home or institutions and 299 others released in the division during the last 24 hours till 8 am today.

“Among the total 10,239 COVID-19 patients, 393 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after recovery of 8,091 patients and 177 deaths while 1,578 remaining in home isolations,” he said.

Since the beginning, a total of 73,604 people of the division were put in quarantines, and of them, 67,906 released and 5,698 are currently remaining in home or institutional quarantines.

The government hospitals and health services providing facilities currently have 1,123 physicians, 1,757 nurses and 5,907 other staff to provide treatments to the coronavirus infected patients in the division.

“We have a capacity of 2,552 beds at 25 quarantine and isolation centres and 13 beds with 13 ventilators at two intensive care units of two hospitals to provide treatments to the COVID-19 patients in the division,” Dr. Ahmed added. Talking to BSS today, Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Lyzu asked everyone to abide by health directives to prevent COVID-19 spread.
