CHATTOGRAM, Aug 30, 2020 (BSS) – The Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), was observed in Chattogram and its adjacent areas today with due religious solemnity.

On the 10th of Muharram in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and followers died by the soldiers of Yazid at the battle of Karbala on the bank of Euphrates in Iraq.

In view of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, a short programme was been taken in the city and its adjacent districts on this occasion. Police took special security measures marking the occasion.

Earlier Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) banned all kinds of tazia, mourning and other processions in the port city on the occasion of the holy Ashura.

The CMP authority urged not to allow anybody to enter the function venue without wearing masks and asked everyone to apply necessary health protective measures at all stages.

However, devoted city dwellers performed religious rites in compliance with the health rules. Carrying of knives, daggers, scissors, spears, swords, sticks and displaying of fireworks and crackers were not seen in the function this year.

Various religious organisations and political parties took different programmes to observe the day.

Besides, most Muslim families in the port city offered Fateha to mark the day.

According to Islamic history, a disagreement among Muslims on the question of succession after the demise of Hazrat Ali, the fourth caliph, resulted in the Karbala tragedy.

Moreover, Imam Hossain (RA) and his fellows were ambushed by the forces of Yazid on a journey towards Kufa.

They were deprived of food and water, and many of them were put to death and eventually, Imam Hossain (RA) was brutally slaughtered.
