RAJSHAHI, Aug 30, 2020 (BSS) – Administrative officials and soil scientists put emphasize on soil health protection to boost food production and ensure food security to meet gradual demand of rising population.

To this end, all the field level agricultural officials and staff should work together to protect the soil health to keep up its productivity as defending soil health from further degradation is crucial, they observed.

They made the observations in a function arranged on inaugurating the regional office of the Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) in Chapainawabganj on Saturday afternoon.

Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Komolaranjan Das addressed the discussion as the chief guest, saying, the newly established office will contribute a lot to protecting the soil health through motivating and inspiring the farmers as a whole.

Deputy Commissioner Nurul Haque, Director of Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute Dr Samajit Kumar Paul, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Nazrul Islam and SRDI Principal Scientific Officer Dr Nurul Islam also spoke, while SRDI Principal Scientific Officer Muhammad Kamruzzaman presided it.

Komolaranjan Das said substantial and sustainable uses of required organic fertilizers in the farming fields are very important for boosting soil health and its productivity.
Plant and animal waste based fertilizer has a vital role towards protecting the soil nutrients which are being declined due to various natural and man-made catastrophes, he said.

There is no alternative to protect the soil nutrients from further declining trends amidst the adverse impact of climate change.

He urged the SRDI scientists and researchers to motivate and encourage the farmers towards promoting soil test based fertilization to contain the soil health related crisis.
