TK 3.2 cr to be spent to protect coastal areas from tidal surges, floods: Farooque

BARISHAL, Aug 29, 2020 (BSS)- With the country exposed to onslaughts of frequent floods and tidal surges, a Taka 3280 crore project has been undertaken to construct 139 polders with the financial assistance of the World Bank to offset the nature’s fury from the deluges in the coastal areas.

This was told to newsmen by State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque today after inaugurating a tree-plantation programme in Lamchhari area of Charbaria Union in Barisal Sadar Upazila, a press release said.

He said the concerned authority will build 10 polders in the first phase.

A total of 39 polders will be constructed in the next five years and the rest in phases, he said, adding that it will reduce flooding or tidal damages in the concerned areas.

Later, he distributed relief aid on behalf of the Premier among the flood victims in Palashpur area of Barisal city.
