Bangladesh reports 45 COVID-19 deaths, 1,93,458 total recoveries

DHAKA, Aug 27, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh today recorded 45 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) deaths and 2,436 fresh cases overnight.

The recovery count rose to 1, 93,458 after another 3,275 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period, a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said today.

“Forty-five more COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll from the pandemic to 4,127,” the release said.

It said the tally of infections has surged to 3,04,583 as 2,436 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

A total of 15,124 samples were tested at 92 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 16.11 percent tested positive, while 20.30 percent cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

Among the total infections, 63.52 percent patients have recovered, while 1.35 percent died so far since the first COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8.

Among the 45 deaths, 34 are male and 11 female, the press release said, adding, one in his 30s, seven in their 40s, 11 in their 50s, while 25 are above 60 years and one is between 11 to 20.

According to the division-wise data, 22 deaths took place in Dhaka division, 10 in Chattogram division, five in Khulna division, six in Rangpur division and rests are in other divisions.

Among the total 4,127 deaths, 1,990 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 908 in Chattogram division, 277 in Rajshahi division, 340 in Khulna division, 159 in Barishal division, 187 in Sylhet division, 177 in Rangpur division and 89 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

A total of 15,00,385 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first COVID-19 cases in the country.

The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the COVID-19 patients, the government has introduced telemedicine services, comprising 70 physicians and 20 health workers, for round-the-clock in the country.

A total of 2,55,147 people have so far received healthcare services from telemedicine.

Referring to the updated information of World Health Organization (WHO), the DGHS said till August 10, infection rate of COVID-19 is 64.7 percent in Dhaka division, 14.4 percent in Chattogram, 5.5 percent in Rajshahi division, 5.1 percent in Khulna division, 2.5 percent in Barishal division, 2.7 percent in Rangpur division and 1.9 percent in Mymensingh division.

It said 1,95,23,784 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

As of August 27, 2020, 13:13 GMT, 830,567 have died so far from the COVID-19 outbreak and there are 24,372,134 currently confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics. China was the world’s first country which on January 11 reported the first death from the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province.
