DAE sets up 4,640 homestead vegetable gardens in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH, Aug 27, 2020 (BSS) – Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has started setting up homestead vegetable gardens in the district with a view to meeting nutritional demands and food security amid COVID 19 situation in the country.

Department of Agriculture Extension office sources said, under the programme a total of 4,640 homestead gardens have already been set up in all 13 upazilas of the district. The size of each garden is one decimal, the sources added.

Deputy Director of DAE Motiuzzaman said for setting up the gardens, DAE has distributed incentives including quality seeds of different verities of vegetables and cash money among the farmers.

Each of the farmers got Taka 1,935 for fencing and management of their gardens.

The farmers of the villages have been improving their livelihoods through homestead vegetable cultivation, he said.
Plant doctor and in-charge of Dulla block Selim Reza told BSS that the farmers of the area are showing more interest to make vegetable gardens in their homestead.

Of the total vegetable gardens, 35 are in Mymensingh Sadar upazila, 35 in Muktagachha, 416 in Phulbaria, 384 in Trishal, 352 in Bhaluka, 480 in Gafargaon, 416 in Nandail, 352 in Ishwarganj, 320 in Gouripur, 320 in Tarakanda, 320 in Phulpur, 384 in Haluahgat and 224 in Dobaura upazila.
