3,500 jobless people get cash support in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 25, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 3,500 jobless people living in
the Brahmaputra river basin areas of the district got cash support of Taka
one crore and five lakh from Disaster Risk Management (DRM) project in last
few days to face the critical and awkward situation caused by coronavirus
outbreak.

Locals sources said, hundreds of people particularly the poor and the day
laborers of the river basin areas have become totally jobless due to the
lethal virus outbreak.

They could not go to other districts of the country in search of works
amid the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the people were passing their
days and nights with hardship for want of money and they were struggling to
survive.

In order to help the affected people, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society
(BDRCS), Gaibandha district unit, with the financial support of Swiss Red
Cross (SRC) stood beside them with cash support to run their families without
economical trouble at the critical time.

A total of 3,500 affected people of Ghuridaha union under Shaghata upazila,
Fazlupur, Erendabari, Gozaria, Fulchhari, Uria, Udakhali, Kanchipara unions
under Fulchhari upazila and Ghagoa and Gidari unions under Sadar upazila in
the district got TK 10 lakh 50 thousand. Each of them received TK 3000.

The money was distributed to the beneficiaries from July 26 to August 16,
2020 through the postal department of Bangladesh.

Gaibandha Zila parishad chairman Ataur Rahman Sarker and assistant
commissioner (land) of Sadar upazila Nahidur Rahman formally inaugurated the
cash distribution activity to the accounts of the beneficiaries as the chief
guest and the special guest respectively.

Unit secretary Rezaul Karim Reza, Manager DRM-SRC Tuhin Samaddar, DRM
project manager Golam Mostafa, Resilience Coordinator Amal Kumar Pramanik and
other unit members were present at the programmes.

Apart from it, BDRCS, Gaibandha district unit, also distributed cash
support of TK 45 lakh to the 1000 people of Kapasia union under Sundarganj
upazila, Kamarjani and Mollarchar unions under Sadar upazila and Erendabari
union under Fulchhari upazila under Forecast Based Flood activity to face the
situation. Each of them got TK 4500 from the unit.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin and district relief and
rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali formally inaugurated the money
distribution to the selected people of the unions as the chief guest and the
special guest respectively.

Deputy head of Delegation of Swiss Red Cross Sanjib Biswas Sanjoy, unit
members and local elite including journalists of print and electronic media
were present on the occasion.
