Online discussion on early warning for river erosion held

DHAKA, Aug 24, 2020 (BSS) – CARE Bangladesh organized an online
lesson sharing workshop today at the Department of Disaster
Management.

Md. Atiqul Huq, Director General of the Department of Disaster
Management, attended it as Chief Guest, said a press release.

CARE Bangladesh-led Start Fund Bangladesh/UKAID funded River Bank
Erosion Anticipatory Based Response Project in Kurigram has been
successfully implemented in collaboration with Center for Environment
and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS, a Public trust under
Ministry of Water Resources of the GOB) and SOLIDARITY, Kurigram
maintaining close coordination with local administration in Kurigram.

“Distress of the affected community due to erosion can be reduced in
two ways. One is the structural intervention and the other is early
warning and response. DDM is interested to work collaboratively with
relevant organization to mainstream early warning and early action
protocols of river bank erosion” said Md. Atiqul Huq.

For the first time in Bangladesh, early warning of river bank
erosion was used to support community people living in the risk prone
zone before the erosion took place.

As per the project deliverables, the erosion risk areas were
demarcated on the ground by raising river erosion warning marker and
provided 430 households with cash support to relocate their houses in
collaboration with Union Disaster Management Committee and Upazila
Disaster Management Committee. This project also supported four
schools for repairing and strengthening structures by earth work and
retention wall.

“Early action can save resources and reduce distress. It is yet to
be proved as effective as the response after disaster. We need to
invest more for utilizing tech-based solution to take early action,”
said Prabodh Devkota, Deputy Country Director-Program of CARE
Bangladesh.
