Workshop on Modern Energy Cooking System held

DHAKA, Aug 16, 2020 (BSS) – A workshop on ‘Modern Energy Cooking System’ was held here today aiming to mitigate health hazards faced by women and children due to emission of air pollutants in the kitchen from the conventional stoves.

The workshop titled- ‘Inception Workshop on Modern Energy Cooking System’ was jointly organized by Practical Action and United International University, Dhaka in coordination with Household Energy Platform (HEP), Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, said a press release.

Mohammad Alauddin, Chairman (Additional Secretary), Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), Power Division, MoPEMR was present as the chief guest in the workshop.

He suggested ensuring the availability of modern cooking appliances for the mass people of Bangladesh especially the poor as per the opinion of the experts discussed in the workshop.

SalimaJahan, Member (Joint Secretary), Renewable Energy, Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority(SREDA) & PD, Household Energy Platform Power Division, MoPEMR, the special guest of the workshop, emphasized on the use of cutting-edge technology like: “Solar Thermal Heat System” in cooking to reduce the time.

She also suggested putting focus on the durability factors of the cookstoves and giving importance of male householders along with female while conducting the cooking diary data collection survey.

Professor of United International UniversityM. Rezwan Khan delivered a presentation on ‘Technical Aspects of Electric Cooking: Prospects and Problems’’ in the workshop.

He focused on the comparison of different cookstoves in terms of energy savings and cost effectiveness and also the challenges and benefits of electric stoves among other types of stoves.

Utpal Bhattacharjee and ShoohaTabil, Consultants, Practical Action, jointly delivered on the Market, Business and Social Business Aspects of Electric Cooking.

Utpal Bhattacharjee discussed about the market penetration level of the modern electric cooking appliances and outcomes of the MECS project.

ShoohaTabil discussed about social aspects, challenges and implementing tasks to conduct social survey to collect cooking diary data in 30 households of 5 districts in urban, peri-urban and rural sites of Bangladesh.

Engr. Uttam Kumar Saha, Strategic Lead- Urban and Energy, Practical Action, conducted an open discussion session with government dignitaries and representatives from private sector involved in the business of clean cooking energy and modern cooking appliances.
