Brahmaputra water swelling up again

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – The water level of Brahmaputra River is swelling up again due to the onrush of hilly water coming from upstream, but the overall flood situation continues to improve in the Ganges and Meghna basins.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in rising trend and they may remain steady in the next 24hours, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said in a bulletin this morning.

The Ganges-Padma rivers are in falling trend, which may continue to decrease in the next 48 hours.

Except the Kushiyara and Someswari, the rivers of the upper Meghna basin in the north-eastern region of the country are in declining trend and the rivers may fall in the next 24 hours, the FFWC daily bulletin said.

The overall flood situation has further improved in the Ganges basin as a result of continuous fall of water level in many of its rivers, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.

Flood-affected people in Sirajganj, Bogura, Natore, Naogaon and Pabna districts started returning to normal life as flood situation improved there.

Of 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin today, water levels receded at 22 points, while went up at eight points.

The rivers were flowing below the danger level at all the 30 points this morning.

A falling trend of water was recorded at all the four points of the Ganges River and many other points of Padma River this morning, superintending engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.

He said water level of the Ganges River decreased by nine cm each at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi point, six cm at Hardinge Bridge point and three cm at Talbaria point.

The Ganges River was flowing 191 cm, 203 cm, 123 cm and 113 cm below the danger levels at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively, while the Padma River was flowing five cm below the danger mark with a two-cm fall at Goalundo point, Mukhlesur added.

Water level of the Korotoa River was reported a rising trend afresh at Chak Rahimpur point, while falling trend at Bogura point, and the river was flowing 139 cm below the danger level at Chak Rahimpur point with a 36-cm rise.

The river was flowing 248 cm below the danger mark at Bogura point with an 11-cm fall this morning.

Besides, a rising trend of water was recorded at all the three points of the Jamuna River. The water level of the river increased by 13 cm each at Sariakandi point in Bogura and Kazipur point in Sirajganj and 12 cm at Sirajgonj point, the FFWC data showed.

But, the river was still flowing 22 cm, 39 cm and 35 cm below the danger level at the three points respectively at 9 am today.

The Gur River was flowing 15 cm above the danger level at Singra point in Natore with a five cm fall afresh, while the Atrai River was flowing five cm below the danger level with one cm fall.
