Flood situation may worsen in B’putra basin

DHAKA, Aug 12, 2020 (BSS) – Flood situation may worsen further in Brahmaputra basin as the authorities concerned forecast that water levels of its (basin) rivers will rise due to the onrush of hilly water coming from the upstream.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system is in rising trend, which may continue to increase in the next 48 hours, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said in a bulletin this morning.

The FFWC’s latest flood outlook says water level in Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system will rise at Chilmari station in Kurigram, Sariakandi station in Bogura, Fulchari station in Gaibandha, Bahadurabad station in Jamalpur, Kazipur and Sirajganj stations, Elasin station in Tangail and Aricha station in Manikganj after August 14 next.

The Ganges-Padma rivers are in falling trend, which may continue to decrease in the next 48 hours, the FFWC daily bulletin said but the Surma-Kushiyara rivers of upper Meghna basin in the north-eastern region of the country are in rising trend and it may continue to rise in the next 24 hours.

Flood situation may improve at the low-lying areas adjacent to the Dhaka city in the next 24 hours, according to the bulletin.

The overall flood situation improved in the Ganges basin as the onrush of hilly water from the upstream declined, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.

Flood-affected people have started returning to normal life as the flood situation in the Ganges basin further improved following continuous fall of water levels in most of its rivers in the last couple of days.

Of 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin today, water levels receded at 21 points, while went up at nine points. Besides, the rivers were flowing below the danger level at all the 30 points this morning, according to the FFWC data.

A declining trend of water was recorded at all the four points of the Ganges River and many other points of Padma River this morning, superintending engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.

The Ganges River was flowing 182 cm, 194 cm, 117 cm and 110 cm below the danger levels at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively with nine cm, six cm, four cm and five cm decline afresh respectively, while the Padma River was flowing three cm above the danger mark with a seven cm fall at Goalundo point, he added.

Water levels of the Korotoa River were reported a falling trend at Chak Rahimpur and Bogura points and the river was flowing 175 cm and 237 cm below the danger level at the two points respectively this morning.

A rising trend of water was recorded at all the three points of the Jamuna River. The river was increased by 29 cm, 13 cm and six cm at Sarishabari in Bogura, Kazipur in Sirajganj and at Sirajganj points respectively this morning.

But, the river was still flowing 39 cm, 52 cm and 47 cm below the danger level at the three points respectively at 9 am.

The Atrai River was flowing 80 cm below the danger mark at Atrai point in Naogaon with a nine-cm fall afresh, while 379 cm below the danger mark with a 34-cm rise at Mohadevpur point in Naogaon.
