Water resources ministry to plant 10 lakh saplings of trees

DHAKA, Aug 10, 2020 (BSS) – Water Resources Ministry will plant 10 lakh tree saplings in 2.5 thousand kilometer areas in the country marking the Mujib Year, the yearlong celebration of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The tree plantation programme will be implemented on the premises of the different departments, riverbanks and lands under the ministry.

Officers of the ministry will supervise the tree plantation campaign in all the districts in two phases on August 11 to 14 and from August 27 to 30.

The water resources ministry today announced the programmes at a press briefing in the ministry’s conference room here.

The Ministry of Water Resources has taken the programme to plant different varieties of trees including forest, fruit-bearing and medicinal for increasing forest coverage in the country.

At the press briefing, State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque said under the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a programme of planting 1 crore saplings has been launched to increase forest resources and build green belt as part of Mujib Year celebration.

The state Minister said 59 departments of Water Development Board will plant 10 lakh tree saplings in the area of 2.5 thousand kilometers. Parliament members, local administrations, civil society, scouts and freedom fighters will also participate in the tree plantation programme.

Deputy Minister for Water Sources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem said the ministry has already directed the local administration for implementing the tree plantation programme.

He hoped that the tree plantation programme will be implemented successfully within scheduled time.
