KCC takes mega project to remove water logging

KHULNA, June 28, 2018 (BSS) – Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has taken a
mega project to remove water logging from the city.

The project proposal styled ‘Development Project on Drainage System for
Removing Water Logging in KCC’ involving Taka 843.84 crore was sent to the
Ministry of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) on Wednesday, KCC
sources said.

The project includes, excavation of nine canals and Mayur River and
bindings of its banks, rebuilding of eight sluice gates for removing rain
water from city roads, construction of 62 kilometers (km) large drain and 128
km small drain beside city’s nine main roads.

Besides, the project has also includes construction of three floating
bridges on Mayur River, the sources said.

The chief planning officer of KCC Md Amerul Zabbar told BSS that the
project has been sent to the ministry concerned for approval with the
recommendation of existing mayor Moniruzzaman Mony.

Talking to BSS, newly-elect KCC mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque said, “With
the consent of existing mayor Moniruzzaman Mony, I gave direction to the
engineering department of KCC to prepare a project proposal to remove water
logging.

“I have better experience in removing water logging during my last tenure
(2009-2013),” he said.

“I started my task under the ‘Nagar Anchal Development Prokalpo’, in 2013,
but could not complete excavation of city’s 22 canals due to many reasons,”
he said, adding “It was my prime commitment out of 31election manifestos
before the last KCC election.”

Khaleque also hoped that the project will get nod from ECNEC before he
takes charge as mayor on September 26 this year.

Moshiur Rahman, executive engineer of KCC, said KCC had a master plan on
drainage system for removing water logging during the tenure of previous KCC
mayor Khaleque.

He said with the direction of newly-elect mayor Khaleque, “We have taken
the mega project following the master plan.”
