Bangladesh missions abroad observe Bangamata’s birth anniversary

DHAKA, Aug 9, 2020 (BSS) – The 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed in different Bangladesh missions abroad in a befitting manner.

Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the USA celebrated the day on Saturday by holding discussion on life and works of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, screening a documentary on her pre-independence struggle alongside Bangabandhu, readout of the messages of the President and the Prime Minister, special prayer and cutting the birthday cake.

Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Mohammad Ziauddin flashed back on how Bangamata devoted her entire life to look after her own family and the families of the arrested Awami League leaders as well as advance the Bengali’s movement for emancipation by encouraging Bangabandhu to face all eventualities during the painful days of his life under Pakistani military junta.

The ambassador recalled Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’s wisdom and farsightedness and advices to Bangabandhu at critical times.

She was also the inspiration behind Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March speech at Dhaka’s Race Course from where he had called on the Bengali nation to fight for freedom and independence, he said.
“Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib remains a shining star of Bangladesh’s history of independence because of her sagacity, farsightedness, and astute appraisal of evolving politics and well thought out decisions,” he noted.

The ambassador said after independence, Bangamata devoted her time to be at the side of Bangabandhu in rebuilding the war-ravaged Bangladesh. She stood beside the women tortured by the Pakistani occupation army, rehabilitated them in society and also arranged marriage of many girls from poor families, he added.

“For her entire life of sacrifice, and for her wise and pragmatic counselling of Bangabandhu in leading the Bengali nation to attain a country of their own, it is only right that the grateful Bengali nation proudly and rightfully so honored Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib as ‘Bangamata’,” he said.

Bangladesh permanent mission in the United Nations (UN) also observed birth anniversary of Bangamata in befitting manner through maintaining social distancing on its premises.

The programme was begun offering a special prayer followed by screening a documentary on Bangamata’s pre-independence struggle alongside Bangabandhu, readout of the messages of the President and the Prime Minister, and a discussion.

Bangladesh permanent representatives in the UN Ambassador Rabab Fstima spoke about Bangamata’s life and works and her immense contribution to building the country and the nation.

Saying that this year’s birth anniversary of Bangamata carries special significance due to Mujib Year, marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation, she underscored for taking a collective effort to present life and ideology of Bangamata in front of young Bangladesh diaspora abroad.
