Bangamata’s birth anniversary observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Aug 8, 2020 (BSS) – Local units of Bangladesh Awami League and different other government and non-government organizations observed the 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Rajshahi city in a befitting manner today.

To mark the day, leaders and workers of the city unit of the ruling party held a discussion meeting at its office highlighting the life and works of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib paying glowing tributes to her.

They also placed floral wreaths on the portrait of Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib in front of the party office.

This year’s theme of the day is – ‘Bangamata is a courageous symbol of sacrifice and beauty.”

City unit president and Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, General Secretary Dablu Sarker, former vice-president Shahin Akter Rainy, Prof Shafiqur Rahman Badsha and Advocate Aslam Sarker were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Liton said Fazilatunnesa Mujib was not only the wife of Father of the Nation but also one of the pioneers of the Bangalee’s struggle for freedom.

He said Bangamata had also a significant role from behind the scene in Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March speech.

With her inspiration, the unwritten speech Bangabandhu had delivered emitting from his heart was the call for independence, he added.

District administration also held a discussion meeting at its conference hall with Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil in the chair.

Deputy Director of Local Government Division Shahana Akter Jahan, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shariful Haque, Deputy Director of Women Affairs Department Sobnom Shirin and District Children Affairs Officer Monzur Kadir were present.

On the occasion, each of 60 beneficiary women was given one sewing machine for improving their living and livelihood condition. Twenty other women were given Taka 2,000 each through mobile banking.

Rajshahi University also observed the 90th death anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib paying rich tribute to her.

Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan accompanied by Pro-vice-chancellors Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and Prof Chowdhury Jakaria and Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib at Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall.

They also held a discussion meeting at the conference hall on the occasion.

Addressing the meeting, Prof Abdus Sobhan recalled that during the Liberation War in 1971, Bangamata had faced the situation with patience, courage and wisdom when her husband remained imprisoned in Pakistan.

After the independence, Bangamata devoted herself to rebuilding the war-ravaged country.

She stood beside the violated, repressed and self-sacrificing women and sisters by ensuring their treatment, sympathizing and extending cooperation to them and took initiative to make them socially established, he added.
