COVID-19 cases ascent to 13,843 in Khulna division

KHULNA, Aug 8, 2020 (BSS)- The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) positive
cases has surged to 13,843 today due to continuous rise in the daily number
of lethal virus infections in recent weeks in all 10 districts of Khulna
division.

“The number of patients climbed to 13,843 with 324 new infections was
reported after testing 356 samples on Friday at three COVID-19 Laboratories
in the division,” Assistant Director (Health) of Khulna division Dr. Ferdousi
Akhter told BSS this noon.

Of the newly detected COVID-19 patients, 73 are in Kushtia, 60 in Jashore,
57 in Bagerhat, 54 in Khulna, 27 in Chuadanga, 23 in Narail, 16 in Magura and
14 in Meherpur districts in the division, she said.

Following detection of new COVID-19 cases, the respective houses of the
infected persons in different areas under the division were placed on 14-day
lockdown according to the health safety guidelines.

Dr Ferdousi said the whereabouts of the persons, who came in contact with
COVID-19 patients, were brought to notice and they were asked to remain in
home isolation so that the virus cannot spread further.

She said all the positive cases for COVID-19 have, so far, been brought
under necessary treatment while 13,928 others are being monitored in
isolation units in different hospitals under institutional supervision and
9,240 of them have been released.

“The district-wise break-up of the patients now stands at 4,646 are in
Khulna, 2,159 in Jashore, 1,970 in Kushtia, 1,075 in Jhenaidah, 898 in
Narail, 816 in Chuadanga, 780 in Satkhira, 694 in Bagerhat, 562 in Magura and
243 in Meherpur,” the health official said.

“With the healing of 278 more infected patients, the total number of
recovered COVID-19 patients rose to 8,999 with the recovery rate of 65
percent in Khulna division till this noon,” she said.

During the last 24 hours till 12 noon today, 186 people were put in
quarantine at home or institutions and 231 others released in the division.

“Among the total 13,843 coronavirus infected persons, 1,398 are undergoing
treatment at isolation units of different hospitals as 8,999 have recovered
and 238 died while the rest are undergoing treatment in isolation at their
respective homes in the division”, Dr. Ferdousi said.

With five more deaths reported from two in Kushtia, one each in Jhenaidah,
Khulna and Satkhira on Friday, the total number of fatalities rose to 238 in
all 10 districts of the division,” she added.

“The district-wise break-up of the total fatalities remains at 72 in
Khulna, 40 in Kushtia, 30 in Jashore, 23 in Satkhira, 18 in Jhenaidah, 15 in
Bagerhat, 12 in Narail, 13 in Chuadanga, eight in Magura and seven in
Meherpur,” she said, adding that the average casualty rate among the total
13,843 infected patients currently stands at around 1.72 percent in the
division.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Rasheda Sultana today told BSS that a
total of 51,351 people of the division were put in quarantines since the
beginning, and of them, 48,748 released and 2,603 are currently remaining in
home or institutional quarantines.

She urged upon everyone for wearing masks, maintaining physical distance
and abiding by all health directives set by government to prevent further
community transmission of COVID-19 infection in the division.
