Flood situation improves in B’putra, Ganges basins
DHAKA, Aug 7, 2020 (BSS) – Flood situation continues to improve in the Brahmaputra and Ganges basins thanks to dwindling of the onrush of hilly water from the upstream.
As the flood situation improved in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours ending 9 am today, many displaced people are returning to their homes.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said water levels of major rivers receded and were flowing below the danger level at all river points in Brahmaputra basin.
The improving trend in the flood situation may continue during the next 72 hours as no precipitation was recorded in the basin and northeastern Indian states in the upstream during the last 24 hours, they said.
The water levels of the Brahmaputra marked further fall by 16 cm at Noonkhawa point and 13 cm at Chilmari point, while Dharla River water receded by 26 cm at Kurigram point and Ghaghot River by 7 cm at Gaibandha point during the period.
The water level of the Jamuna also marked decreased by 23 cm at Fulchhari point, 26 cm at Bahadurabad point, 21 cm at Sariakandi point, 14 cm each Kazipur and Sirajganj points.
The Brahmaputra was flowing 91 cm below the danger level at Noonkhawa point and 49 cm below at Chilmari point, while Dharla River was flowing 83 cm below at Kurigram point and Ghaghot 30 cm below at Gaibandha point at 9 am today.
The Jamuna was flowing 35 cm below at Fulchhari point, 29 cm at Bahadurabad point, seven cm below at Sariakandi point, 18 cm below Kazipur and 5 cm at Sirajganj points at 9 am.
With reduction of precipitation and onrush of water from the upstream, the water level of many rivers in Ganges basin continues to recede, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.
Of the 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin today, water levels declined at 18 stations, while went up at 10 points and remained stable at two points.
The rivers were flowing below the danger level at 24 points, while above danger mark at five points this morning.
The water level remained stable at Rajshahi point, while it increased by two cm at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj and declined by three cm and two cm at Hardinge and Talbaria points respectively in the past 24 hours ending 9 am today, BWDB Superintending Engineer Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.
He said the water level in the Padma River further declined by 15 cm at Goalunda point this morning.
However, the Ganges River was flowing 169 cm, 179 cm, 93 cm and 82 cm below the danger levels at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively, while the Padma River was flowing 55 cm above the danger mark at Gualundo point, he added.
Besides, the water levels of the Korotoa River and the Jamuna River under the Brahmaputra Basin flowing through Bogura and Sirajganj districts were reported the falling trend this morning.
Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), said the water level of the Korotoa River decreased by 46 cm at Chak Rahimpur, while went up by two cm at Bogura point.
The river was flowing 74 cm and 165 cm below the danger mark at Chak Rahimpur and Bogura stations respectively this morning.
Bhuiyan said the water level of the Gur River further receded by five cm at Shingra point in Natore and the river was flowing 58 cm above the danger mark.
The Atrai River was flowing 52 cm above the danger level at Baghabari point in Sirajganj with an 11 cm fall afresh this morning.
Water level of the Mohananda River further decreased by four cm each at Rohanpur and Chapainawabganj points and the river was flowing 90 cm and 94 cm below the danger mark at the stations respectively.
