COVID-19 cases jump to 6,886 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Aug 6, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases jumped to 6,886 as the highest number of 157 new patients were reported in a day after testing 376 samples on Wednesday at two COVID-19 Laboratories in Rangpur division.

“The COVID-19 infection continues rising in recent weeks following a limited scale community transmission of the virus in the division,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

“The district-wise break up of the total 6,886 patients now stands at 1,792 in Rangpur, 361 in Panchagarh, 680 in Nilphamari, 436 in Lalmonirhat, 553 in Kurigram, 437 in Thakurgaon, 1,929 in Dinajpur and 698 in Gaibandha districts,” Dr. Siddiqui said.

Since the beginning, a total of 42,447 collected samples of Rangpur division were tested till Wednesday night, and of them, 6,886 were found COVID-19 positive with an infection rate of around 16.22 percent in the division.

“Meanwhile, the number of recovered COVID-19 patients rose to 4,877 with the healing of 109 more people on Wednesday at the recovery rate of 70.82 percent in the division,” Dr. Siddique said.

The 4,877 recovered patients include 1,460 of Rangpur, 228 of Panchagarh, 621 of Nilphamari, 284 of Lalmonirhat, 298 of Kurigram, 274 of Thakurgaon, 1,327 of Dinajpur and 385 of Gaibandha districts.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Amin Ahmed Khan said the number of total fatalities currently stands at 120 in the division with three more deaths, including one each from Rangpur, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur, were reported on Wednesday.

The district-wise break up of the 120 fatalities stands at 32 in Rangpur, 40 in Dinajpur, 12 in Gaibandha, nine each in Nilphamari and Kurigram, eight in Thakurgaon and seven in Panchagarh and three in Lalmonirhat districts.

“The average casualty rate among all 6,886 COVID-19 infected patients currently stands at around 1.74 percent in the division,” Dr. Khan said.

Among the total 6,296 COVID-19 patients, 233 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after recovery of 4,877 patients and 120 deaths while 1,656 remaining in home isolations in the division.

During the last 24 hours till 8 am today, 501 people were put in quarantine at home or institutions and 510 others released in the division.

A total of 62,954 people of the division were put in quarantines, and of them, 58,237 released and 4,717 are currently remaining in home or institutional quarantines since the beginning.

Currently, the government hospitals and health services providing facilities have 1,123 physicians, 1,757 nurses and 5,907 other staff to provide treatments to the infected patients and face the situation in the division.

“We have a capacity of 2,552 beds at 25 quarantine and isolation centres and 13 beds with 13 ventilators at two intensive care units of two hospitals to provide treatments to the COVID-19 patients in the division,” Dr. Khan added.

Talking to BSS, Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Lyzu suggested everyone to abide by health directives to prevent community transmission of COVID-19.
