8 killed, 7 wounded in minibus crash in Egypt

CAIRO, Aug 3, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least eight people were killed and seven others injured late Sunday when a minibus crashed into a canal in Egypt’s province of Giza, south of the capital Cairo, a medical source in Giza hospital told Xinhua on Monday.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle’s steering before it fell in Al-Mariotia canal in Giza,” state-run Ahram newspaper quoted an official security source as saying.

The minibus was transferring workers from a company at the desert road to their houses in Monufia province, it added.

The medical source said that two of the wounded are in critical conditions.

Initial investigations have attributed the accident to the driver’s high speed.

The prosecution ordered an immediate investigation of the accident.

Egypt suffers a high rate of traffic accidents that kill thousands of people every year mostly due to the negligence of traffic rules and high speed.
