DNCC, DSCC prepared to remove animal waste within 24 hours

DHAKA, July 31, 2020 (BSS) – Dhaka’s two city corporations – Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) – have completed all preparations to remove the sacrificial animal waste within 24 hours.

For this, additional manpower, vehicles and other logistical equipment would be used in both the corporations.

The DNCC and DSCC authorities have urged the city dwellers to slaughter the sacrificial animals at the designated places.

“There were about 40,000 tons of waste from the slaughtering of sacrificial animals last year but this time, the two city corporations think that animal slaughtering will be less in the coronavirus situation. However, the city corporation officials said that they are working with the target of removing this amount of waste,” DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore M Saidur Rahman told BSS.

“Special arrangements have been made to remove this huge amount of waste in time so that people can celebrate Eid peacefully. In addition, an overall plan has been adopted for the smooth disposal of waste after the sacrifice,” he said.

“A total of 256 places have been fixed for animal sacrifice in 54 wards in 10 areas under DNCC. Plans have been made to train and prepare 250 Imams and 250 meat makers for halal and pure animal sacrifice,” he added.

At the field level, DNCC’s own, outsourcing and primary waste collection service provider (PWCSP) workers, 11,508 cleaners and DNCC officials and staff at all levels will be ready to remove the sacrificial waste.

For this, all kinds of leave for employees of all levels have been canceled. Besides, a total of 430 heavy and light vehicles have been prepared to remove waste, he said adding, the sacrificial site would be decontaminated by sprinkling water mixed with Savlon and bleaching powder through 11 water vehicles.

About 51 tons of bleaching powder, 960 cans of liquid disinfectant and 6 lakh waste bags will be distributed to protect the environment and keep it pollution free.

He said, a central control room has been set up to record various problems and complaints of the public.

Letters have been sent to Dhaka WASA to supply the required amount of water for spraying bleaching and Savlon mixed water.

A letter has been sent to the Metropolitan and Traffic Division of Bangladesh Police to keep traffic jams free on Eid day and two days after Eid.

Besides, leaflets distribution, campaigning on social media and playing recordings of awareness raising messages through loudspeakers are also being carried out calling upon the people to refrain from sacrifice animals here and there rather do that in designated places maintaining hygiene and keeping wastes in specified bags to cooperate the authorities in proper waste management.

He also said that the people are requested to make sacrifices while maintaining personal safety during COVID-19.

Meanwhile, DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore M Badrul Amin told BSS that this time, 6,000 cleaners of the organization will work to remove the waste of Eid-ul-Azha sacrifice in 24 hours.

He said, a monitoring control room has been set up to ensure proper supervision of the sacrificial animal market and waste disposal activities.

In addition to the departmental heads of the DSCC, the officers and employees will perform their duties in different directions.

At the same time, another team has been formed with officers and employees for on-the-spot monitoring of field-generated waste removal activities, who will supervise field-level waste removal activities in 75 wards.

Any citizen under the DSCC area can call the control room on 01709900605 to provide information regarding waste removal.

He said that if any citizen or media worker of the DSCC affiliated area calls this number and lodges any complaint regarding the removal of sacrificial animal waste, immediate action will be taken to remove it.

About 5.5 thousand tons of waste will be generated on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. About 1 lakh special bags are being distributed from DSCC for waste storage.

Animals will be slaughtered at 75 designated places in 65 wards of DSCC. For this purpose, 1 lakh leaflets have been distributed to create public awareness.

At the field level, a total of 6,000 cleaners including DSCC’s own, PWCSP staff and all levels of DSCC officials and employees will be ready to remove waste within 24 hours.

A total of 300 heavy and light vehicles have been prepared for waste disposal. The place of sacrifice will be decontaminated by sprinkling water mixed with Savlon and bleaching through 12 water vehicles.

About 42 tonnes of bleaching powder and 1,600 liters of liquid disinfectant will be sprayed to protect the environment and keep it free from pollution, the official said.
