Jahangir seeks cooperation of all for building planned Gazipur city

GAZIPUR, June 27, 2018 (BSS) – Newly elected Gazipur City Mayor Jahangir
Alam today sought cooperation of all for building a modern and planned
Gazipur city.

Expressing his gratitude to Gazipur city dwellers for electing him as
mayor, he said, “With the assistances of all levels of people, I want to
build a planned Gazipur city.”

Jahangir made the reaction after he was announced as the newly elected
Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor by the returning officer.

Awami League mayoral candidate Md Jahangir Alam won the Gazipur City
Corporation (GCC) polls defeating his nearest contestant BNP-backed Hasan
Uddin Sarker with a large margin.

Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mandol announced this morning the unofficial
result of the election, which took place yesterday in a peaceful atmosphere
amid tight security. Out of the 425 centres, polls at only nine centres were
postponed after receiving allegation of irregularities.

According to the unofficial result of 416 polling centres, Md Jahangir
Alam got 4 lakh 10 votes while Hasan Uddin Sarker bagged 1 lakh 97 thousand
611 votes.

Islami Oikkya Jote nominated mayoral candidate Fazlur Rahman got 1,659
votes, Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Md Nasir Uddin 26,381 votes,
Bangladeshi Islami Front candidate Md Jalal Uddin 1,860 votes, independent
candidate Farid Uddin Ahmed 1,617 votes and Bangladesh Communist Party
candidate Kazi Md Ruhul Amin bagged 973 votes.

Rakib Uddin said 57.02 percent of the total voters casted their votes in
the Polls, where a total of 6 lakh 30 thousand 111 votes were found valid and
18,638 invalid.

He said the voting was postponed in nine centres, due to irregularities,
where the number of voters were 23,959.

Voting started at 8 in the morning with participation of a huge number of
voters, standing on long queues. The voting continued till 4 pm without any
break. There were 425 polling stations in 57 wards for 11, 37,736 voters.
