Faridpur town protection embankment collapses again

FARIDPUR, July 28, 2020 (BSS) – At least 45 metre of town protection embankment in Bilgozaria area under Sadipur village of Sadar upazila here has collapsed again due to rising flood water, an official said.

The mounting flood water swelled Padma river as its huge current rammed into the reconstructed dam terribly in the area around 4 pm on Sunday, leading it to collapse, said Sultan Mahmud, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Faridpur.

Immediately after the collapse, several houses, valuables and trees were washed away by heavy rush of flood water, he said, adding that vulnerable people from adjoining area were evacuated to safer places.

Faridpur Pourashova Mayor Mahatab Ali Methu said the flood-driven increased water in Padma river contributed to embankment collapse again.

After paying a visit to the spot, Deputy Commissioner Atul Sarker said a new sluice gate might be constructed to protect the dam from further damage of flood water.

He said local people were asked to take refuge at Govt. Rajendra College flood shelter centre at Baitul Aman campus in the town for the time being.
