Fast bowler Anik banned for two years for doping violation

DHAKA, July 26, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh’s young fast bowler Kazi
Anik Islam has been banned from cricket for two years following his
first doping offence, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on
Sunday.

He is the first Bangladeshi cricketer to be banned from the cricket
for doping offence.

Anik, a first class cricketer, had represented the Bangladesh
Under-19 Team in the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup and considered as the
future prospect of the country.

BCB said in a press release that the bowler, who is believed to be
fastest amongst the current Bangladeshi fast bowler, has accepted the
sanction.

The player tested positive for Methamphetamine (d-) during an
in-competition test conducted on 06 November, 2018 in Cox’s Bazar.

Anik’s achievement like medals, points and prizes obtained from
November 6, 2018, day of his sample collection, shall be disqualified
and forfeited, a BCB press release said.

The two-year period of ineligibility will commence on February 8,
2019, the day of formal notification of the player’s adverse
analytical finding and the day upon which he accepted a provisional
suspension. He will therefore be re-eligible to participate in cricket
and cricket activities at midnight on February 7, 2021.

“The procedure was lengthy because we had to maintain all the
things in accordance with the BCB and ICC rules and therefore the
announcement was delayed,” Rabeed Imam, the BCB senior manager, media
and communications, said here today.
