Notice served on UP chairman over Ashrayan project scam

SUNAMGANJ, July 26, 2020 (BSS) – A notice has been served on Rezwan Khan, chairman of Rafinagar Union Parishad of Derai upazila, asking him to return the money he allegedly embezzled in the name of implementing a project of Prime Minister’s special initiative Asrayan Prokalpa here.

“Rezwan Khan, also chairman of the Asrayan Prokalpa in Rafinagar union, was served a notice on July 16 for returning the money, which he embezzled in the name of project implementation, by 90 days. If he fails to return the money within the stipulated time, a case will be filed against him,” Safi Ullah, Derai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), told BSS today.

A new chairman will be appointed for the project afterwards, he said.

According to officials, 10 acres of government khas land on the northern bank of Piain River near Banglabazar area of Rafinagar Union in Derai was selected for rehabilitating 400 homeless families under the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Special Initiative Asrayan Prokalpa. A total of 997 metric tons of wheat was allocated for filling soil on the project site.

Some 125 metric tons of wheat was released on December 31 last year in the first phase while more 125 metric tons of wheat was released on January 9 in 2020 in this regard, the sources said.

But project implementation officer of Derai Nazrul Islam found only 9 percent progress of the project against the allocation of 250 metric tons of wheat when he came to inspect the project area and measured the soil filling activities on June 25, which was the last date for the project implementation.

As per the inspection report, Derai upazila administration asked Rezwan Khan to return Taka 44 lakh to the government treasury within the next 90 days.

Local lawmaker Dr Jaya Sengupta said no irregularities will be tolerated centering the Prime Minister’s Asrayan Prokalpa.

She said that she would talk to Sunamganj deputy commissioner (DC) over the issue for taking necessary measures against the persons involved in the irregularities.
