JS body for restricting visitors at parks amid COVID-19

DHAKA, July 26, 2020 (BSS) – The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forests Ministry today recommended restricting public gatherings at different parks, including Lawachara National Park, till October 2020 aiming to protect their environment, biodiversity and forest resources during the coronavirus pandemic.

The parliamentary watchdog made the recommendation at its 14th meeting held at Sangsad Bhaban here with committee chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair, said an official release.

The meeting discussed the draft of ‘Forest Conservation Act-2020’, and the progress of the implementation of the recommendations of the 1st to 5th meetings of the standing committee on the ministry of the 11th parliament.

It also discussed the protection of the country’s environment, biodiversity and forest resources; the deaths of tigers, elephants and dolphins during the coronavirus pandemic; and the recent incidents of hill cutting in Chattogram.

The committee decided to submit its report on the ‘Clean Air Bill’ 2019 to the House in its next session.

Committee members – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin, deputy minister Habibun Nahar, Dipankar Talukder, Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Md Rezaul Karim Bablu and Khodeja Nasrin Akter Hossain were, among others, present at the meeting.
