Risky Ctg illegal hill dwellers asked to evacuate very soon

CHATTOGRAM, July 22, 2020 (BSS)- The District Administration today asked the residents of its nine risky hill areas about possible landslides which could claim their lives.

In order to prevent casualties from landslides caused by heavy rainfall, the authority also decided to evacuate the residents who have been resided at these risky hill pockets as soon as possible time. In this regards, they opened 19 shelter centers in Chandgaon, Bakalia, Agrabad and Kattli circles of the port city..

During the coronavirus pandemic, the authorized persons also asked to maintain social distancing for personal safety while staying in the shelters.

The authority carried out continued miking through the loudspeakers since morning from nine separate spots including Motijharna, Batali Hill, Ak Khan Pahar, Tankir Pahar, Amin Jute Mills Area, Raufabad Hill, Khulshi Hill, Pahartali Hill, Fayez Lake, Akbar Shah Area Lake-1,2,3 Area Hills, Mujib Nagar and Kaibalyadham and asked the residents of these risky hilly areas to leave their makeshift houses as Chattogram and its adjoining areas experienced heavy rains in the third consecutive days.

The activities of the shelter centers are being conducted by six Assistant Commissioners (Lands), in charge of six circles of the city and District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer. Adequate stocks of dry foods and clean water have been kept there for the people who come to take shelter.

Touhidul Islam, executive magistrate of the District Administration, told BSS that the district administration has started various activities since this morning to evacuate the people as there is a fear of landslides due to heavy rains.

Torrential rains that continued to shower since last Sunday night reached an extreme form up today and affected civic life and business activities badly in the port city and its adjacent districts. .

Besides, some employees of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) directed by its Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin have been miking since this morning through loudspeakers and asked the residents in risky all nine hilly areas to move to safer places.

In spite of knowing the ensuing dangers; the people of low income group mostly the rickshaw pullers and day labourers make up their temporary settlements and started to live in those risky hills, the district administration sources said.
