Jahangir Alam wins GCC mayoral Polls

GAZIPUR, June 27, 2018 (BSS) – Awami League mayoral candidate Md Jahangir
Alam won the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC)polls defeating his nearest
contestant BNP-backed Hasan Uddin Sarker with a large margin.

Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mandol this morning announced the unofficial
result of the election, which took place yesterday in a peaceful atmosphere
amid tight security. Out of the 425 centres, polls at only nine centres were
postponed after receiving allegation of irregularities.

According to the unofficial result of 416 polling centres, Md Jahangir
Alam got 4 lakh 10 votes while Hasan Uddin Sarker bagged 1 lakh 97 thousand
611 votes.

Islami Oikkya Jote nominated mayoral candidate Fazlur Rahman got 1,659
votes, Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Md Nasir Uddin 26,381 votes,
Bangladeshi Islami Front candidate Md Jalal Uddin 1,860 votes, independent
candidate Farid Uddin Ahmed 1,617 votes and Bangladesh Communist Party
candidate Kazi Md Ruhul Amin 973 votes.

Rakib Uddin said 57.02 percent of total voters casted their votes in the
polls when a total of 6 lakh 30 thousand 111 votes were found valid and
18,638 were invalid.

He said the voting of nine centres was postponed due to irregularities
where the number of voters was 23,959.

Voting started at 8 in the morning with participation of a huge number of
voters, standing on long queues. The voting continued till 4 pm without any
break. There were 425 polling stations in 57 wards for 11, 37,736 voters.

According to the Returning Officer’s office, a total of 345 candidates,
including seven for mayoral post, 254 for councilor posts and 83 for reserved
posts for women were vying in the polls.

Earlier, the Returning Officer said the elections were held in a free, fair
and peaceful manner.

The Election Commission expressed satisfaction over the peaceful voting in
the Gazipur city polls. “We are satisfied as the Gazipur City Corporation
polls ended in a fair manner,” Secretary of EC Secretariat Helal Uddin Ahmed
told newsmen at Agargaon Nirbachan Bhaban here.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister
Obaidul Quader in post poll press conference on Tuesday said none but BNP
made allegations over the GCC polls.

“There is no allegation of violence in the GCC polls. But, panic was
created among people in the polls. In reality, nothing was occurred,” he told
a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office.

Three-tier security measures were taken to ensure security during the
election as 10,500 members of law enforcement agencies, including police,
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar, were
deployed in the GCC area.

A total of 29 platoons of BGB, 58 teams of RAB, 57 mobile forces and 20
striking forces of police performed their duties during the election.
