Flood situation improves in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 21, 2020 (BSS)- The overall flood situation in the district further improved as water level in the river Jamuna has been decreasing continuously.

During the last 24 hours, the Jamuna dropped by 10 cm and was flowing 77 cm over the red mark (19.50 meter) at Bahadurabad ghat point during the last 24 hours ending at 12 this noon.

On the other hand, water level of the old Brahmaputra river swelled up three cm and was flowing four cm over the danger level (17 meter) at Jamalpur Ferry Ghat point during the last 24 hours till 12 this noon.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said the flood has affected nine lakh 94 thousand 707 people in 677 villages under 59 unions out of 68 unions in the district. In the flood water, nine people including two elderly men, two babies, four teenagers and a youth drowned, the office sources added.

According to the office sources, around 2,11,502 people, the highest number in the district, were affected by the flood water in Dewanganj upazila while 1,98,270 people in Madarganj, 1,51,911 people in Melandah, 1,47,887 people in Sarishabari, 1,43,750 people in Islampur, 73,864 people in Bakshiganj and 67,523 people in Jamalpur Sadar upazilas were affected by the flood water.

Rehabilitation Officer Nayeb ALi said the flood situation is gradually improving. Around 410 tonnes of rice, Taka 19 lakh in cash, 4,500 packets of dried foods, baby foods worth about Taka two lakh and livestock foods worth aboutTaka two lakh were distributed among the flood victims, he said.

Besides, a total of 3,408 tonnes of rice were also disbursed among the flood victims through VGF cards, he added.
